Michael Coady (1939-2024)

Born in Carrick-on-Suir, Co. Tipperary, Ireland in 1939, Michael Coady was a teacher, an author, a researcher, and one of Ireland’s foremost poets. He was internationally renowned as an authority on the history and peoples of his home town, Carrick-on-Suir.

He was the recipient of the Patrick Kavanagh Award for Poetry in 1979; in 2004 he received the Lawrence O’Shaughnessy Award for Poetry at the University of St. Thomas Center for Irish Studies of St. Paul, Minnesota; and in 2005 he wasHeimbold Professor of Irish Studies at Villanova University. He was honored as a member of Aosdána, the Irish Academy of Artists. He has held residencies in the arts in Paris  and in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada.
